We live in the modern world. Every thing is fast-paced. Send that email, do this, do that, microwave this, and “how come this flu medicine is not working yet?”.
We seem to be in a rush. Are we in a rush for something? I have watched many movies and the implicit advice these movies have given me is that if you rush life by, you miss to smell the roses, see the sunsets and miss life itself altogther. What a total tragedy, isn’t it?
It seems that many of us define ourselves by what we do. Recently, the newspapers stated that a lady died of being over-worked. WOW! Where the heck did that come from?
I know I am in danger of defining myself by the work I do. It becomes the essence of who I am, but should this be the case? I do not think so. I believe strongly that our identity should not be based on what we do. It should be based on who we really are. The child who tried to developed under opposing forces of nature, the child who learnt to cope with stresses and disappointments, the child who has been hurt by significant people in his life. This child is the human person. Am I making any sense?
Maybe I can clarify by saying that ‘doing’ should not define us, rather, ‘being’ should define us. Of course, the question of ‘being’ being too ugly becomes a question of hiding into ‘doing’. But that would be another post, won’t it?
